A Note About the Falcons

I could really care less about the Falcons. I mean, I watch them and want them to do well. But they more or less provide a nice distraction on Sundays.

Their start to the season has been disastrous. But before you hear pundits and hacks like a certain Macon talk show host wonder if a Mike Smith is on some sort of hot seat for this bad season (and I’ve heard this talk show host say before he needed to win a playoff game last year or else…), here is a little perspective.

In the Falcons 47 year franchise history, the Dirty Birds have made the playoffs 12 times. 12 times in 47 years. They have made the playoffs 4 times in the Mike Smith era. 4/12 times under Coach Smith.

They have won their division 5 times in 47 years. Two of those have been under Smith.

The Falcons never had back to back winning seasons until Coach Smith arrived in 2008. Since then, the Falcons have never had a losing season.

Like I said, I don’t really care, but those are just the facts.

I think they might have had multiple winning seasons and playoff berths during the Leeman Bennett era in the late 70’s early 80’s. Bennett was then fired by the genius Smiths.
