Allow Me To Rant For A Moment

You know what Grinds my Gears?

Bicyclist and motorcyclist.

Espeically in a hippie-crunchy town like Athens, the bikers would ride all over the roads and be a general annoyance.  Yet, they want to be treated like the big boy cars.  You see road signs and license plates that say “Share the Road.”   These hippies on their bikes and these But when a cyclist wants to take advantage of their situation, they don’t treat themselves like a regular car.

Example:  I was heading to South Georgia last week and was held up on I-75 South between Perry and Montezuma.  I had never seen 75 like that in South Georgia before; the interstate became a parking lot.  It was a dead standstill.  It was like something you’d typically see in Atlanta.  I put my car in park and just chilled.  Folks were getting out and walking around.    It stayed like that for about 30 minutes or so.  I was beginning to think there was a horrible accident with several fatalities and I was going to be stuck there all day.

Fortunately, it was nothing serious and no one seemed to be injured.  It appeared a dump truck had gotten a flat, and they were just trying to move it off to the side.  As I sat there in the traffic, a gang of old retired gentlemen riding thier hogs on a beautiful  morning decided they weren’t going to wait, and their time was more valuable than anyone elses.  So they started riding and weaving in between the cars and made their way to the breakdown lane.  From there, they went along their day.

So, cyclist want the same, equal treatment on the roads.  They want motorist to “share the road” with them.  BUT they only want this equal treatment as long as it does not conflict with their interest.  It is not just motorbikes.  How many times have you passed a biker, and you then are stopped at a redlight.  The biker continues on past you!

I say if the bikers want equal treatment, they shouldn’t use the ability to bike around situations to their advantage.

Some of those in Athens on bicycles are on them because they can’t drive (DUIs).

Although I definitely agree, they need to follow the rules of the road same as everyone else (and legally, they are supposed to). But I disagree with the idea they should be treated like cars. They aren’t the same. Cars have to slow down considerably to go the same speed as a bike. Having a bicycle in traffic can cause severe problems as others have to slow down around them.

Mechanics lesson: If most motorcycles are stopped for an extended period they will overheat. The majority of motorcycle engines are air-cooled. Many sports bikes are liquid cooled. This is why California law allows them to zig and zag throughout traffic.

If you think that it was a mechanical issue, then so be it. But I contend they circumvented the traffic becuase they could, not out of taking care of their engines.

I think all bicycles that use our roads have tags, break lights & turn signials, then we’ll share the expense along with the road. All motorcycles ought to have mufflers like cars also.
