A 30,000 foot view of Mark Richt

Chris Low chimes in on the news of Mark Richt’s contract extension.  Low is a credible journalist who has covered the SEC for a long time and has a lot of perspective.  He is not some blogger trying to occupy some down time before the phones start ringing at work.   It is reall easy to bemoan your current situation, in whatever situation you face in life.  But the grass is not always greener on the otherside.

Low makes the outstanding point that while the opinion of some fans “respect Richt as a man, but feel like the football program has hit a ceiling with him as head coach,” there is a lot of upside in the program right now and most schools and programs would want to trade positions with UGA right now.

But Low hits the nail on the head right here:  “And starting anew in this league after pushing out a longtime coach who’s sustained success is anything but a foolproof solution. Just ask the folks at Tennessee.”

There are going to be folks out there who are always going to support Mark Richt until it just gets absolutely awful.  I’ll put myself in that category.  There are folks out there like Kensington and Bill Shanks who are like Low describes above who will not see anything good Coach Richt or the program does.  And then there are the rational ones like Chris Low.

If UGA fans want to be competitive with Vandy, KY, and Ole Miss, then Richt is your man. If UGA fans want to be competitive with Bama and LSU, then they better find another coach. To the UGA fans who are disappointed with the three year extension, take heart, Fresno State fired their coach after 15 years, and he put out some pretty good teams during his tenure. There may be hope for getting rid of Richt yet.

Did you really just compare our Dawgs to Fresno State? I think the best point Low made was that Georgia, Florida et. are looking up at Bama and LSU, but so is every other team in the entire country! I’ll take 30 more years of Coach Richt just like this over the fiasco that has been UT football for the past half decade. If Coach Richt goes, who comes in? Do we really want a Muschamp or son of Dooley situation here? Why is it that nobody has a good replacement for Richt, they just want him gone? It makes no sense.

Chris Low has no dog in this fight so those that do better pay attention. We are blessed Coach Richt is accepting a contract extension.

Well there are also people like myself. I love Mark Richt and hope he is our coach until he dies. However, i was extremely disappointed in our performance over the past few years. This past season offered some hope, but let’s face it, we only beat the teams we should have. I expect better from the Dawgs. I was pleased to see that we were willing to part with troublesome players, even the talented ones. But we still have a ways to go. The biggest disappointment in my mind is team personality. Where are the guys the other team is scared to get on the field with? We used to have those guys pretty consistently. That’s what I like about Grantham. I think that with CTG we’ll be putting some more of those guys on the field defensively at least. Offensively? The jury is still out.
