Maybe The SEC Isn’t As Great As We Thought

I had incorrectly likened the SEC to the “Nature Boy” Ric Flair.  The SEC puts on the best contest, has the best personalities, plays a little dirty and is the most prestigious and lavish of all the other conferences.  The SEC has a bunch of  limousine ridin’, jet flyin’, kiss stealin’, wheelin’ dealin’ sons of a guns.   With the conference expansion and other conferences trying to compete with SEC with the TV deals, it is like other guys want to be with us, and if they don’t, they want to be like us.

Despite the fact the SEC is about to win its 6th consecutive National Championship and its 7th since 2003, I am starting to have my doubts about the conference’s influence on a national stage.

You’d think that since the SEC has been a winner, has had 3 out of the last 5 Heisman Trophy winners, huge TV Contracts, the pundits would have a better understanding of what goes on down here.  Though no SEC school has green officially in their colors, but the SEC’s official colors should be green becuase of all the money the conference has and becuase every one else is green with envy.

But I guess the national media, namley the “northeastern” media, hasn’t paid much attention to the SEC in recent years becuase of all the attention now on Denver Broncos QB Tim Tebow.

Even in last night’s GOP Debate, Rick Perry made allusions to being the “Tim Tebow” of the Iowa caucus (h/t Blutarsky).

Last night on Sportscenter, there was an analyst talking about how much of a polarizing figure Tebow is, and how unpopular he is in some circles.

Either you love Tebow, or you hate him.  Most fans in the SEC outside of Gainseville, namley in Athens, aren’t the biggest fans.

I made the mistake one day of listening to Sean Hannity and he was talking about how people don’t like Tebow becuase of his religion and asked why do we in America villify someone becuase they are open about their faith.  I have heard Rush make similar complaints.

The anit-Tebow crowd is nothing new in these parts.  And it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact he is open about his faith.  There is no doubt he is a great leader.  He is talented.  That is not why folks dislike him.  It is the crying, the celebrating after 3 yard runs, the  haircut, the overall douchebag-ness of Tebow that drives folks crazy.

I understand why the media latches onto him.  Denver was 1-4 pre Tebow, 7-1 post since he started.  He is the hot story in the most popular sport in the United States, professional football.  But you would think that if the national media and ESPN have paid as close attention to the SEC as I thought they would have, they would know that Tim Tebow had his critics from the 11 other fan bases in the SEC.  It should come to no surprise that people outside of Denver find him annoying.

Corbindawg

PS:  It takes real talent to tie in Tim Tebow AND Ric Flair, two polar opposites, in the same post.

He’s a great athlete and a good Christian, but he’s not a great quarterback. It’s that simple. He has a 48% passing percentage, which is about 20% shy of what the greats like Rodgers have.

But Timmy’s a winner, you say. No, he’s won games, but he’s limited. Look at the Broncos most notable wins — a weak Jets team where Sanchez played like a fool? Carson Palmer? Come on. Tebow has a great defense supporting him and miraculous 50+ yd field goals. He’s not breaking 20 pts some games and still winning.

I can’t wait to watch the game on Sunday, when he is matched up against Tom Brady, an elite QB.

If the Broncos win on Sunday, I will be sick from eating so much crows pie, but I seriously and highly doubt that’s going to happen.

A good athlete, a good Christian, sure, but not a great QB. I want the Tebow train to wreck so all the band wagoners will be violently thrown off.

I love my Dawgs but I have to say am cheering for Tim Tebow. Most my friends are UGA fans also and almost all of them feel the same way I do. You think people dont like him for his hair cut and for showing emotion. You sound like a total douche yourself. All the bad things and bad people in sports and this is why people hate Tebow. Your clueless! People that don’t even watch sports have a opion on him. I guess they saw his hair cut and was like what a douche bag or maybe people like their Pro stars to be more like ric flair which I love as a character but is just that a character. Just because you are a character doesnt mean you have character. I think in our watered down society and sports people are scrared of others who have so much conviction about something rather they understand it or not. We as a society have become a bunch of haters. You included. Tuxedo dawg cheer for a good athelete and a good chistian to fail so you can be right. Thats sad and I know my spelling sucks so no need to comment on it even if you are all about the negative.

I compared Ric Flair to the SEC, not Tebow. So I am not sure you fully understand the point or premise of the post. You might want to “Tebow” for a moment and re-read. My point is that before now, Tebow was disliked so this is nothing new, and the dislike is for a variety of reasons, not based on his faith like the AM Talk Radio hosts will lead you to believe. And if you don’t think, or have never thought, that Tim Tebow was a douchebag, we must have a different definition of the term. And yes, that gelled hair crew cut and celebrating wildly after a 3 yard run is douchey. My negativity is nothing to do with his convictions or Christian beliefs, and for Rush and Hannity to say that THEY are the ones who don’t know what they are talking about.

Never said or lead you to the idea that you were comparing Tebow to Ric Flair maybe you you should re read my reply and Tebow yourself. Ill spell it out for you Most people excepect their pro althletes to be like Ric Flair. Do you need me to list some of these athletes for you. I didnt know Rush and Hannity commented on the reasons you hate tebow but if they did you would better then them know why you have such hate for tebow. In these parts most people would not hate him for his religous beliefs but in other parts this my be a big reason but again I don’t think thats it. I think people have a big problem with people who have convictions whatever they are. They would rather have their atheletes spineless when it comes to anything besides playing their sport. I think people believe that people with real convictions are intolaralbe. I don’t want artist or atheletes to preach to me. I dont think Tebow does this but he does let you know what his beliefs are and its so genuine. Unlike some others that praise God one minute and getting arrested for spousual abuse the next

    . Go Dawgs

Spell it out for you may not have been the best way to word it consendering my spelling ability

corbin dawg you are an obama lovin joke. people are riled up because he shows his faith you idiot not because of his hair. if you ever played ball you know crying after a loss dont make you less of a man . as a dawg fan i never saw him celebrate after 3 ard unless it was a td .go wathc chris mathews and get a chill up your leg

  5. 8 Realdawg December 16, 2011 at 8:27 pm

Ronald Reagan used ,the gel of his day, in his hair. Did it make him a douchebag? Im not a hair gel type of guy but I try not to make my opinion of another guy based on how he wears his hair. Not that theres anything wrong with that.haha I think the big problem with your post is that you just assume people have the same reasons to hate Tebow as you do but its not all about you. I mean I guess some hate him for his hair but I think your in the minority with a few other lady fashion police. Now if he wore another mans jersey or Affliction Ts all the time then I might also pull my fashion badge out but still wouldnt hate him.

Again, I never said I want my athletes to be over the top characters like Ric Flair. I compared the SEC as a whole to Ric Flair. I thought it was a rather astute analogy, but I guess it was lost. And I don’t mind someone sharing their convictions-see Mark Richt.

What I do mind is a douche bag. He is not wearing old man hair gel. If I have to explain the difference, then you just don’t get it. He is a douche. It should be that simple. I don’t like him becuase of his hair gel, how the media rams him down our throat and all of his antics on the field.

You know who Tebow is like-David Pollack. And yes, I have been on the record on this blog before saying how much of a douche David Pollack was/is. You know the differnce? He was OUR douche. I can see where Pollack would aggrevate opposing teams fanbases, and you know what, I get it.

It’s that simple. He has a 48% passing percentage, which is about 20% shy of what the greats like Rodgers have.
Sounds like you play Fanasty football. Stats stats stats. Sorry he does fit into your fanasty football profile of a QB. Real football is played on the field which would be hard for most Fanasty players to find since theyve never been on any field except maybe a field trip. Im so sick of the NFL making everything about scoring but thats another topic.

Who are you even talking to? Me or Corbindawg? Geez, I comment and don’t check back to this blog for a few hours and you’re saying Tebow isn’t a douche cause Reagan used hair gel. That came out of nowhere.

  7. 12 ericdawg December 16, 2011 at 9:52 pm

He is the flavor of the month, together with his antics. Not all people supporting him has nothing to do with his religion nor QB play. He is just winning that is why, and people will just be curious to know how far can he really push his kind of play. This weekend against New England will likely be a taste of reality, just like when he played against Stafford and Detroit.

  8. 13 ericdawg December 16, 2011 at 9:57 pm

Apologies for my sentence construction above. The current popularity of Tebow is just because he continue to be the UNDERDOG, with some media folks actually waiting for his ultimate fall. Not so different when UGA went into that 10 game run

  9. 14 KentuckyDawg December 17, 2011 at 10:29 am

Corbindawg, in the words of Lewis Grizzard, a great American, “Tell it all, brother. Tell it all”. I don’t like Tebow for several reasons. First and foremost, he played for the Swamp Chickens. I will never root for someone who came out of Gainesville no matter how good the sports pundits think they are. Secondly, it’s the undeserved media coverage. Andy Dalton and AJ Green (a former Dawg) are setting the world on fire in Cincinnati. How often do you hear about these rookies? You don’t, because St. Tebow is sucking up all the oxygen. And third, there’s no crying in football!

  10. 16 Realdawg December 17, 2011 at 8:54 pm

Becuase of his hair gel, how the media rams him down our throat and all of his antics on the field.I cant believe your sticking to the gel thing miss girlly man and yes the media over exposes him but most of it in the beginning was negative. Im happy to see them pondents eat crow. Antics on the field.Never seen him act like he has a chapionship belt, eat popcorn, or answer his phone after a play. What praying after a TD? You and your astute anology think everthing is about you. My comparing Ric Flair to what alot of people want to find in their athlelets had nothing to do with your clever anology. I just used Ric Flair because he was mentioned in your post. You are very smart but I was able to understand your brilliant comparison Flair to the SEC. Your Pollock comments makes me think it is all about relegion for you but maybe you just hate Hair gel that bad. Are you Bald?

  11. 17 Realdawg December 17, 2011 at 8:58 pm

Tuxedo boy I was talking to you about the stats and the only field you seen was a field trip. Still believe it.

  12. 18 Realdawg December 17, 2011 at 9:17 pm

Kentucky dawg, him playing for the swamp chickens is the only good reason anyone has come up with to hate tebow for. He doesnt want all the attention and if Stafford would have won us a NC he could cry everytime he talks and I would still love him. He was crying because he was PO. Not because he felt sorry for himself. I know some country strong folks that you do not want to mess with when they have tears in their eyes and I believe none of yall would try and make fun of them to their face.

  13. 19 Tuxedodawg December 17, 2011 at 11:55 pm

Settle down, guys. Realdawg’s nerve has been struck. He’s making allegations of religious tolerance, male pattern baldness, people participating in field trips, and how real men cry.

Tebow still annoys this piss out of me. And I will not be surprised when he doesn’t miraculously win tomorrow night.
