It’s Too Early On A Monday For This

I have been out of pocket for over a week, and have let a few things slip by.  One story this morning riled me up, and I haven’t had any coffee yet.

Greg McGarity apologized to the Rocky Guy.

Tom Fell is a UGA student who dresses like the Rocky and runs to the top of Stegeman Coliseum.

The controversy came up at the UGA Athletic Board meeting Thursday, when student representative Trey Sinyard reported to the board: “I can say that this has been a big issue on campus. . . . The pulse on that is students feel the athletics association is over-commercialized.”

Yes, Greg McGarity, Director of Athletics apologized to Tom Fell, douchebag who likes to parade around Stegemen wearing short shorts.

Two quotes in the story that are troubling:

1.  “We have had internal discussions on that and have assured students that there are some things that are sacred in our basketball games, and that’s one of those things,” McGarity said. (emphasis added)

2.  The controversy came up at the UGA Athletic Board meeting Thursday, when student representative Trey Sinyard reported to the board: “I can say that this has been a big issue on campus. . . . The pulse on that is students feel the athletics association is over-commercialized.”

Let’s address these in order, becuase they are the order in which I have the most heart burn.

1.    I know we aren’t a basketball school.  But to call the Rocky guy a sacred fixture is a bit far.  On the “Traditions” page at, I don’t see “Shirtless Rocky Guy Running up the Stairs”.   Seriously, Greg McGarity has way more important things to bother himself with…the feelings of the Rocky guy are not one of them.

2.  I would hope the majority of students feel the same way I do.  But let’s assume for a minute the majority of students do in fact love the Rock y thing. I don’t get it, but whatever.  Mr. Sinyard-you have a seat at the table at the Atheltic Association:  don’t waste their time and yours by bringing up such asinine topics.  Why don’t you mention real concerns, like why doest the A.A. pony up more dough for campus cleanup so the administration doesn’t bring the hammer down on tailgating restrictions?  Or, why don’t your bring up issues like the difficulty new alumni have in procuring season tickets due to the high donations?  Nah, let’s make sure the final two home games the Rocky guy gets to dance around.  It is a sacred tradition, afterall.

That is another thing.  You think the Assocation has become too comercialized?  Well, you have to pay, what $2 per ticket for basketball games?  Is it still $8 per ticket for football?  Baseball, gymnastics and all other sports are free for students?  Ever been to any other sporting events?  Sponsorhsips make the world go round?

Students should spend more time going to the games and cheering and being loud all the time rather than complaining about a corporate sponsorship…and when a student gets a seat at an important table, don’t waste everyone’s time with something so incredible silly.

It always seems that someone wearing red panties is filling up the time of the UGA AD.

I don’t think that the issue is that students think that sports have become over commercialized. I think the problem is when they try to use unpaid students to push a product. And the reason tickets are still cheap for students is that we pay those fees. Which, when they add up, are a huge bonus for the A.A.

Do the Cameron Crazies need a guy dressed up like Rocky to motivate the students? I also don’t think they need something planned. Fake juice…

    I’m with you 100%.

The AA & UGA Admin do whatever they want. The only way students get a little bit of traction is that they throw them a bone (pun intended) every now and then to make them (I guess “us”) feel good. Though there are some good ones out there, most undergrads involved with UGA leadership have a chihuahua complex. They’ll yapper a lot about something but they are content with just a quote.

If I were these companies I wouldn’t even think about sponsoring a basketball game…go big or go home with football.

How long is this guy’s shelf life? Are we going to be watching a shirtless 30 year old run up and down the stairs? There is only so much time in an official time-out.

    • 5 Tuxedodawg February 28, 2011 at 1:08 pm

Well, we do watch a 30 yr old wear Red, White and Blue panties while using a shake-weight. Is there shelf life for him? There’s no chance in heck that he’s a student.

And no, Corbindawg, Cameron Crazies don’t need planned student skits to get the crowd going; they have a team that doesn’t blow leads all the time, they’re ranked year after year, they have multiple national championships to boast about, and they’re just good. You can’t compare Stegeman and CIS, because the two programs that play in the two stadiums are completely different. That’s like comparing Sanford to Duke’s football stadium.

Not comparing Cameron Indoor to Stegemen. We want spontaneous excitement, not fake planned fake juice. The Rocky bit would be funny if it was random; not so funny 4 years later.

You’re right. You didn’t compare the two. You compared UGA fans to Duke fans — I was comparing the two programs as a whole. I don’t think Rocky Guy is funny. I think it’s stupid that McGarity apologized to him. I think it’s stupid that UGA students were making a big deal about it.

But, regardless, the two programs are completely different. And despite UGA’s performance with South Carolina, if they continue to blow big leads, I and other fans may need a lot more than fake juice, Rocky Guy, etc to get us pumped up.

But, bottom line, you’re right. Winning in the coliseum should be McGarity’s main focus, not a Rocky Guy act in the coliseum.

They need a really fat guy to be rocky anyway.
Get a fat guy or stop doing it.

Some of you guys are just too short-sighted. If it takes a thirtyish clown to inspire the crowd who in turn inspires the team, so be it. And, McGrarity, sensing a student reaction gave a very politic he should. Don’t zero in on footbll too much, guys. Our roundball is important to a lot of students and aluni alike. Mr Sinyard represents that constiuency and did his due diligence. Live with guys, you aren’t the only fans in the Dawg nation!!

I know Trey Sinyard pretty well, and I guarantee you that he doesn’t waste time on “asinine topics” at Athletic Association meetings. The ridiculousness of this story press attention– most of what he suggests and works on doesn’t.

Also, Trey’s role is to provide a student voice in the Athletic Association, not to provide alums (like myself) a mouthpiece for their grievances. I’m as fed up as anyone else at some of the practices that go on, but Trey, the STUDENT representative, is not the right person to address those issues. Students complained to him, and he told the board. What’s wrong with that?

    • 11 Corbindawg February 28, 2011 at 8:03 pm

When I was a STUDENT, I was horrified at the prospect of the day when I had to pay 1000s of dolllars for tickets. So I think that would be a valid concern. I also think that if the student body registered those complaints, our student body should be more concerned with getting to game early and cheering rather than getting worked up Rocky guy didn’t get his moment to be the center of attention again.

Technically the crazies do plan a lot of their chants and cheers for the games. They have a “pep” group that does research on other teams and will lead the rest of the crazies in the chants and cheers. That’s what make that student section the best in the country. They are organized and together. They also have had their share of stunts. Think Speedo Guy. I’ve got no problems with the rocky act. I hope that we get to a point where we are no longer the underdawg and can shake that “rocky” role and just start pounding on people like an angry russian.
