I thank God for a lot of things. I thank him for my family and the wonderful parents who raised me. I thank him that I am blessed to live in the greatest state in the union and that I am a proud Georgia Bulldog. I also thank him for minor things such as XM Radio.
You see where I live in Middle Georgia, we are not blessed with great local sports talk radio. If you live in Atlanta there is 680The Fan or if you live in Athens there is 960TheRef. However, in Macon where I work and live we are forced to listen to the boob known as Bill Shanks. Mr. Shanks also writes columns for The Telegraph and they are just as ridiculous as his radio show.
Case in point: In todays’ edition of The Telegraph, Shanks rips into Georgia Speaker of the House David Ralston for honoring UGA head football coach Mark Richt with a resolution after last season’s mediocre 8-5 season. Shanks says that he “was a little confused.” “Had Georgia won the national championship or anything?” “Why not do it five years ago when Georgia won the SEC championship?” Ugh, they did do it. Here’s the link to HR 1429.
Also, Shanks ask the question, “couldn’t they (the General Assembly) find something more important than honoring a 50 year-old football coach?” “Where is the resolution for Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech’s coach?” It’s linked right here Mr. Shanks in House Resolution 1864. You think this clown would do a little research before blabbering on with such nonsense.
Yet, Shanks puts his foot in his mouth again! “Richt should have been honored three years ago, when his team finished No. 2.” Bill- he was! SR 785 for you right here. You can’t make this up!
First let’s be clear. These commending resolutions are not a big deal. Hundreds are dropped daily in the General Assembly. For everything from honoring state dignataries to your ten year old cousin who won his school’s science fair.
They are not time consuming either as Shanks implies. Daily resolutions are approved all together in a little less than five seconds. So, just because a little time was taken to honor Richt after a mediocre season doesn’t mean any more money will be given to Shank’s beloved Sports Hall of Fame.
What is an even bigger joke is that The Telegraph, a once proud daily publication in Middle Georgia, is employing this clown. If Shanks does 10 to 15 minutes of research at the most there would be not a reason to write this column. However, that’s the problem with Shanks. He has no audience. So he needs something to stir the pot. Nevermind that this guy has already been booted off the local ESPN affiliate and is now on a hopeless local Fox station.
Mr. Shanks, do us all favor. Do some research and quit embarrassing The Telegraph and UGA’s Grady School of Journalism. Write a correction op-ed explaining your laziness. Then maybe you will finally begin to earn a miniscule amount of respect.
