I was shocked to hear that Athens landmark Weaver D’s was in danger of closing down. On the heels of Peaches closing down a few weeks ago, the good soul food places in Athens are dropping like pass attempts to Rantavious Wooten.
Though personally I was a Peaches’ man, I hate to see a place that where R.E.M. named their best album after having to close its doors.
Everyone in Athens, go to Weaver D’s this week. $8 for lunch is about what you’d pay most places. If you are on a diet, eat oatmeal for breakfast and supper. Make it happen.

I am in favor of everyone supporting Weaver D’s but there is no way in hell you are convincing me “Automatic for the People” is R.E.M.”s best album.
Really? Well, I say that Eponymous was good, but it was a greatest hits collection. You have “Drive”, “Try Not to Breathe”, “The Sidewinder”, “Nightswimming” and “Find the River”, “Sweetness Follows” plus mainstream favorites “Everybody Hurts” and “Man on the Moon.” It is my favorite one.
It is of course subjective. Sanford222view, I would be curious to know what your favorite is.
Just giving you a hard time. I know it is very subjective. I am more of a “Reckoning” and “Fables” kinda guy. I also really like “Dead Letter Office” but that is more of a compilation. Not really an official album.
Weaver D’s > Peaches
This is terrible news. I ate their once a week while in Athens. Fried chicken, squash casserole, and collards. Kids these days just don’t get it.
I ate there for lunch today. I was so shocked to hear this. Best fried chicken in Athens. Kelly’s Jerk is wonderful, too. And R.E.M.’s best album is definitely Automatic for the People. Up is good and underrated, too, despite it not having Bill Berry.
Had fried chicken and collards at Weaver D’s today. Place was so packed, food didn’t come up for more than a half hour after ordering. Glad to wait. Good to see. Sorry, though, “Automatic” is not the best R.E.M. album. The best is either “Out of Time” or “Document.”
Out of Time is a close second in my opinion.
Ok. W’D's needs to hold the price and increase the portions. I never left Peaches hungry. Cool Athens Icon, sure.
