Senator Blutarsky Must Have Tapped My Phone

This morning, I was talking to Kensington over the phone and we addressed many of the same points that Senator Blutarsky addressed here.  As a matter of fact, it was right about the same time that he posted this blog post, so how freaky is that?

Great minds think a like, I suppose.

Blutarsky is right that there is a double standard-both among the fans AND administration- between the approach in baseball and David Perno and football and Mark Richt.  Now, I know there is some difference.  Football drives everything, is a traditional power, and most fans (including yours truly) really cares more about the Braves than UGA baseball.  Well, outside the years when the Dawgs make the CWS, when then everyone is an expert on UGA baseball.

I am a big picture guy and not a “what have you done for me lately” kind of person.  David Perno has done some great things while in Athens.  3 trips to the CWS and making it to the finals in 2008 was great.  Outstanding.  But an overall .500 winning percentage is not too great.  It is the definition of mediocre.

Mark Richt has career winning percentage of over 75% and has had tremendous success in his career-and all of it was in the SEC.  Why would the administration hedge on Richt but adamantly defend Perno?

Another comment about Richt and the soap opera that is his contract extension.  Richt makes $2.9 million dollars per year.  Richt is the 10th highest paid coach in the country but sixth in the SEC.  I get Miles, Saban, even Chizik making more.  They all have the crystal footballs.  And I know UGA has been down lately.  But Richt should have made more than Petrino and certainly more than Muschamp.   When Muschamp signed on for $3.2 million a year, Richt should have right then demanded to make more.  Georgia prints money.  Why can’t they just throw Richt another $500,000 to make him paid more than Ron Zook 2.0 down in Gainseville?

you and the senator both don’t get it yet.

Perno led his team to 3 College World Series finals in the last 8 years.

Richt has led his team to 0 National Championship games in 11 seasons.

In other words, McGarity is willing to live with a few down years of rebuilding as long as you prove you can get to the final 2, 3 out of 8 seasons.

The peaks are high and the valleys are low. With the resources available in this state, UGA should be going to the CWS that often anyway AND should not be struggling to get in the post season every other year.

I was willing to give Perno a pass for 2009 and 2010 becuase they were stil fresh off the CWS final. But 2012 has been a disaster and the inconsistency is just too bad.

Plus, as I have a said many times, it is unfair to judge Richt soley on National Championships becuase the way a champion is different from year to the next. What is the difference between UGA in 2002 and LSU in 2003 and Florida in 2006? Nothing. LSU 2003 and UGA 2002 are almost identical.

What is the difference between UGA’s 2005 regular season and really, LSU’s 2007 regular season? Nothing.

Corbin, your comment below is nail, head. I just can’t get over how people judge Richt on the lack of a national championship. I commented at GTP that we have a segment of our fan base won’t be happy with Richt until he wins a national championship and beats everyone by double digits ala Nebraska 1995.

My thoughts are that Perno needs to be gone and how they can justify keeping his mediocre record around is beyond me. Yeah Yeah Yeah 3 trips to the CWS and no NC titles. I also believe that CMR doesn’t deserve a raise based on his teams performance over the last few years regardless of what Moosechump or Pervtrino is getting paid. Good for them for pulling the wool over the gaytor and piglet eyes, but in no way does CMR deserve a raise. I’m good with they way they are structuring his contract and making it incentive based. If he wants to build a clinic or a church down in South America then he better start producing on the football field is all I’m saying. Restructuring is buyout is another good call IMHO.
