Unless you’re a Georgia fan living vicariously through the Falcons, it’s been a pretty rotten football season.
But there’s some excitement in Athens with Mark Fox’s Hoop Dawgs. In a season of gridiron frustration, this basketball team has given the Georgia fan, at least the one cheering for sports other than football (which we highly encourage here at TGT), something good to see.
Both teams head into Saturday’s game in Athens with similar records- Georgia is 11-2 and Kentucky is 12-2. Georgia has won an SEC best eight games in a row to Kentucky’s seven. But the similarities pretty much end there.
Kentucky is ranked 10th and a heavy favorite to win the SEC. The Bulldogs are still in the ‘others receiving votes category’ and are picked by basketball pundits to have a good year. Georgia’s losses? To Notre Dame and Temple. Kentucky’s? To UConn and North Carolina.
For the Georgia program, this could be a watermark game – if it wins. Yes, with it being Kentucky, more attention than normal will likely be on it. The good news is that no matter how good or bad the result is the loser on Saturday, the SEC slate is very young and there is still much basketball left.
On that note, if you’re near Athens Saturday, head on up to the Classic City and do all you can to Pack the Steg!
