Why Does It Still Irk Me….

…when I read this headline: Georgia’s lame-duck head coach? Maybe it’s my continued disdain for Bill Shanks. I mean, he’s pretty much spot on with everything in his post. So I don’t know why it bothers me.

I’m by no means waving the flag for Richt’s departure, but I’m not supporting him in his cause either.  He is left with defending his record, and when a head coach has to defend himself, it can’t, and usually doesn’t, end well. If we were to find out tomorrow that he was dismissed, I don’t know how I’d react. I’ll still support him while he’s here, but the days of taking up and defending are over. I wish he could have had a 25 year successful run at UGA, but it just doesn’t work that way. I’ve said it before, and I’ll repeat it again…it is very hard to produce and perform at such a high level for over a decade. It’s why Urban is stepping down. It’s why Pastors and Governors and others have a hard time staying in one place for a long period of time.

Shanks hits the nail on the head- we have witnessed an uninspired team for the past 2 1/2 years. We’ve regressed rapidly, and 2011 doesn’t appear to set up really well for a bounce back.

One of my close friends put it best when he said “I’m an eternal optimist about the Dawgs. I can’t remember the last time we entered a season where I didn’t think we’d go undefeated. I just hope we go .500 in 2011.” That pretty much sums up the thoughts of most optimists.

So, why does the headline bother me so much? I don’t know.

I’ll make a new years resolution to not be so tough on you, Bill. Maybe you were right before everyone else.

If ever a season does bode well for a comeback, it is 2011. If and it’s a big IF..we get through the first two games undefeated or 1-1, there’s a good chance for a very good year.

Just what are you basing that on? Have you seen our schedule?

After our 1st 2 games we play Miss State, Tennessee, Florida, Auburn, Kentucky, and Georgia Tech. We go 3-3 against them AT BEST, in my opinion.

We are losing our top playmaker on each side of the ball, with a coaching staff who seems more interested in rehashing platitudes about looking within themselves than actually getting a team ready to play.

I am not disagreeing with you. But its not like we were getting blown out. Our record was not as good as 09 but we were not run out of any statiums like we were in 09. We may (may) not be that far away but it has to be proven on the field.

Understand your current attitude…it hurts and when you’re hurt you numb out and can’t think logically. The Dawg year 2011 will be different or even I, a firm supporter of Richt and the Dawg program, will strike my flag from outside my house..here in Alabama land… and purchase memorabilia from the local school..Au-Barn!! I don’t believe that will happen..having to strike my flag! Richt will make some tough decisions, what assistants survive that purge will do a lot better…pay attention, Searles, Bobo, and Gardner…we will utilize a lot of underclassmen who want to play and can…we will get better and this is not just some Obama BS but a firm belief in the Georgia program and the man who leads it. If I’m wrong, I’ll be back with my mea culpa this time next year!!
