I guess Alec, harping back to Dooley’s days, thought the defense needed to step up and make a late stand. Alec-scoring for the Fulmer Cup is over, but I like your effort.
Seriously though, I have several problems with this. For one, the AJC.com listed on the headline: Search Warrant Issued for UGA Football Player”. Your read that headline, and you think its something terrible. It turns out it is something little-again. And this happened on June 15-why wait until two days before the season starts to get the warrant? Is the UGA police department that busy from arresting guys who won’t give up their middle names to wait nearly two months to solve this case? A little suspicious timing to me.
Also, bigger picture. The supposed rampant crime problem in Athens is just a lot of silly crimes that is over reported by the bloodthirsty media, and over policed by a group of wannabe rent a cops led by a prick. A couple of Barney Fifes with inferiority complexes.
I mean, this is nothing new. Prior to the 1980 season, five players broke into a UGA lab, shot a pig with a bow and arrow, dressed it in the field, and proceeded to cook it. Could you imagine the tree huggers and media folks today if a group of players did that now? Washaun Ealey hits a University car and all Hell breaks loose. These guys kill a Univerity owned pig and they have to paint the fence all summer.
I don’t think the police should turn a blind eye to serious offenses-like DUI, assault and sexaul battery. Coach Richt hasn’t either.
There is a lot of blame that needs to spread around-the players that go around acting a damn fool. The police department. Greg McGarity needs to have a come to Herschel meeting with Jimmy Williamson, Coach Richt (although he does the best he can) and the all student athletes. Because this affects UGA’s reputation and the fans who pay good money to see their team be successful.
I’m not one to harp on the “good ol’ days, bubba”, but seriously. Let’s all put this into to some type of perspective and have a little more common sense than the journalist trying to save a dying industry and some prick cops.

EDIT: The full report is up now. Looks like it involved a scooter-again.
Greg McGarity-please ban all scooters for athletes.
Of course, this drivel by Schultz sums it up:
http://blogs.ajc.com/jeff-schultz-blog/2010/09/03/no-excuses-georgias-arrests-fall-on-mark-richt/
Our players arent’ brawling in night clubs and beating policemen while they are knocked out. They are pegged for stupid stuff.
Again, Shultz is trying to save his dying newspaper, because crpa like this gets us talking. He is also smart enough to know that when newspapers go bankrupt, he is too stupid to get hired by anyone else. He is grasping at straws to save himslef.
It seems like Ogletree is just dumb and entitled. It seems as if he was just being a punk-no furhter explanation needed. As it turns out, this was not a silly crime (although most of them have been). Mark Richt needs not to dismiss him, but punish him rather harshly-multi game suspension. Make an example out of him, and more importantly, teach an 18 year old a lesson so he won’t make this same mistake again-or a worse mistake.
What else can we do?
Love the reference to the “purloined pig party” or Seagraves to some. Maybe some discipline like Coach Doooley and Coach Kasey provided is what we need. It helped those 1980 guys come together as a team and win a national championship.
