While this is truly a southern blog one can’t not ignore the impact that Yankees owner George Steinbrenner had on the game of baseball. The Grit Tree was sad to hear of the owner’s passing today of a massive heart attack at the age of 80.
He is the author of the big spending free agent market seen in the game since the early 1980s. Steinbrenner became owner of the Yankees as a limited partner, while he ran a successful shipping company back in Cleveland.
One of the more interesting books ever written about ”The Boss” is ”Steinbrenner” by Bill Madden, of New York’s Daily News. While the book will make you think less of the of the emotional, loose cannon owner, he was without doubt the most competitive owner in the history of sports. The Grit Tree mourns the passing of a true baseball icon.
