Bill Shanks the Bimbo!

I thank God for a lot of things.  I thank him for my family and the wonderful parents who raised me.  I thank him that I am blessed to live in the greatest state in the union and that I am a proud Georgia Bulldog.  I also thank him for minor things such as XM Radio.

You see where I live in Middle Georgia, we are not blessed with great local sports talk radio.  If you live in Atlanta there is 680The Fan or if you live in Athens there is 960TheRef.  However, in Macon where I work and live we are forced to listen to the boob known as Bill Shanks.  Mr. Shanks also writes columns for The Telegraph and they are just as ridiculous as his radio show.

Case in point:   In todays’ edition of The Telegraph, Shanks rips into Georgia Speaker of the House David Ralston for honoring UGA head football coach Mark Richt with a resolution after last season’s mediocre 8-5 season.  Shanks says that he “was a little confused.”  “Had Georgia won the national championship or anything?”  “Why not do it five years ago when Georgia won the SEC championship?”  Ugh, they did do it.   Here’s the link to HR 1429.

Also, Shanks ask the question, “couldn’t they (the General Assembly) find something more important than honoring a 50 year-old football coach?”  “Where is the resolution for Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech’s coach?”  It’s linked right here Mr. Shanks in House Resolution 1864.  You think this clown would do a little research before blabbering on with such nonsense.

Yet, Shanks puts his foot in his mouth again!  “Richt should have been honored three years ago, when his team finished No. 2.”  Bill- he was!  SR 785 for you right here.   You can’t make this up!

First let’s be clear.  These commending resolutions are not a big deal.  Hundreds are dropped daily in the General Assembly.  For everything from honoring state dignataries to your ten year old cousin who won his school’s science fair.

They are not time consuming either as Shanks implies.  Daily resolutions are approved all together in a little less than five seconds.  So, just because a little time was taken to honor Richt after a mediocre season doesn’t mean any more money will be given to Shank’s beloved Sports Hall of Fame.

What is an even bigger joke is that The Telegraph, a once proud daily publication in Middle Georgia, is employing this clown. If Shanks does 10 to 15 minutes of research at the most there would be not a reason to write this column.  However, that’s the problem with Shanks.  He has no audience.  So he needs something to stir the pot.  Nevermind that this guy has already been booted off the local ESPN affiliate and is now on a hopeless local Fox station.

Mr. Shanks, do us all favor.  Do some research and quit embarrassing The Telegraph and UGA’s Grady School of Journalism.   Write a correction op-ed explaining your laziness.  Then maybe you will finally begin to earn a miniscule amount of respect.

David Hale must hate being co-workers with Bill Shanks. You’d have thought some of Hale’s sense would have rubbed off on Skanks, I mean Shanks, by now.

I dellivered the Macon Telegraph and News back in the day. First while we lived at Robins Air Force Base …. later when we moved to Warner Robins. I had at one time 310 customers. I rolled and packed them all…often with my Mom’s help and with my Dad on (early)Sunday morning if it was raining. I had two guys that would help me on occasion during football season.( I played Defense for Coach Frank Orgel.) But they had to be rolled and packed and delivered to their door for distribution. Thanks to my Sister for making sure that it got done!
    My how things have changed!

Big time. The quality of the report and columnists especially. They are now just cheerleaders for a program or city instead of holding people accountable which is their job.

The money I spend on satellite radio is well worth it. Instead of Shanks I get to listen to the Finebaum show or Doug Gottlieb on the way home and either Bill King or Mike and Mike in the mornings. While each of them is a little annoying in his own way, none are as bad as Shanks.

I could not agree more!! Skanks slings it to try and cover up his lack of talent. We need a real local sports channel with a real sports announcer!

Couldn’t agree more Kensingtondawg. Even though Shanks is a Georgia fan,he makes me ashamed of some his attemps at journalism. His article last year before the Tech game was the one that ticked me off the most. In it,he said our second half collapse against Kentucky was “almost comical”. What true Georgia fan would have seen that meltdown as “almost comical”? And while most Georgia fans weren’t exactly beaming with confidence before the Tech game,Skanks stated that the outcome “won’t be pretty”.

I live in Macon, too. I listen to AM1500 for Cowherd at 10 in the morning and then at noon switch to 680-The Fan. I used to switch over to AM1670 after 4pm to see what Shanks was talking about but I just can’t take it anymore. He’s a UGA graduate yet slams Georgia at every turn, causing his goofy Techy sidekick to laugh at just about every comment (Huh-Huh-Huh-Huh!!!). It’s the same five callers everyday, too. My advice is to keep it on 680 and just deal with the scratchy signal.
